Commonly known as stick welding, shielded metal arc welding is a manual process. While it’s used primarily with ferrous metals, it can also be used on aluminum and other nonferrous metals as well:

• Can be used to join materials of almost unlimited thickness
• Can be used in any welding position
• Portability of equipment gives it a virtually unlimited work envelope
